A book of the Chinese restaurant in Paris, opened and run by Tai ‘Davé’ Cheung in 1982, that immediately became a fashion, film, art and music industry favourite. Helmut Newton and his wife June were early adopters, Grace Coddington, Bernardo Bertolucci, Allen Ginsberg, Yves Saint Laurent, Francis Ford Coppola followed. It didn’t stop. Davé was the most fashionable eatery in Paris for three whole decades... incroyable! Davé’s clientele were his customers and his friends. The restaurant was always open but also, according to the sign on the door, always COMPLET. If you knew Davé you would be seated and served, without a menu or regard to prices. It was an open secret that everyone was there and yet absolute privacy was maintained. And all secrets would remain sealed but for the fact that Davé took pictures, Polaroids of everyone who was anyone, photos with him in early selfie style, with each other in, in endlessly unexpected combinations, and solo, in disarmingly off-guard portraits. These are the pictures that make up A NIGHT AT DAVÉ, a Polaroid book of historic proportions. There are three texts. Sofia Coppola has written the foreword.
